BBA put “Pedal Power” on the street for PARK(ing) Day 2015. The annual international event (#PARKingDayPHL) was held on September 18 and was celebrated in Philadelphia for the eighth consecutive year. Over 50 interactive mini parks (parklets) appeared on city streets as engineers, artists, activists, planners, local businesses, and average citizens took over metered parking spots in an effort to promote green and pedestrian-friendly urban spaces.
BBA’s installation, dubbed “Pedal Power,” was a cooled seating area powered by a 100 percent renewable energy source: bike pedaling. Passersby were invited to relax in our seating area, or jump on a bike to pedal and cool off others. Check it out on two YouTube videos: here and here.
Led by Joe Matje, the BBA team included Nick Calcagni, Richard Hwang, Adam Graham, Li Cui, Sean McDonald, Seamus McInerney and Katie Roof. Special thanks goes to Del-Ren Associates who supplied the Greenheck fans and onsite assembly support, and NextFab, which hooked up the apparatus which transitioned the pedaling-generated energy to powering the fan.
