Originally constructed in 1900 as a dairy barn, the Millbrook Student Center underwent a complete transformation, converting a once-humble structure into a destination at the heart of this prestigious, Hudson Valley boarding school’s campus. Spaces for studying, recreation and events support Millbrook’s active academic and social calendar. A café, school store and outdoor terrace were new amenities.
Architecture and engineering solutions intertwined to achieve a highly sustainable design, resulting in LEED Gold certification and multiple awards. The green thought process began early, with energy modeling to assess options and evaluate potential energy savings. This task was a crucial step in determining LEED points in the Energy & Atmosphere category.
The $3.3 million renovation and addition improved building performance and user comfort while minimizing energy usage and cost. Contributing factors included a high-performance building envelope, fan-assisted natural ventilation, ground-coupled heat pumps, lighting controls, and back-up power generation.
