Celebrating its 150th year, Delaware Historical Society is a statewide, non-profit organization that explores, preserves, shares, and promotes Delaware history, heritage and culture. It owns and operates several buildings, among them the Delaware History Museum and historic Old Town Hall, two parts of an ambitious renovation project.
In 1995, the society acquired a former Woolworth’s drugstore located next door to Old Town Hall to accommodate the growing collection. Twenty years later, the museum is open for limited programs while renovations are underway to improve the overall visitor experience and to create an African-American Heritage Center. Completed enhancements include a two-story connector between the museum and Old Town Hall, the latter of which was renovated for use as exhibit and meeting space.
When it fully reopens in the fall, the Delaware History Museum will feature reconfigured exhibit space, gift shop and classrooms; new restrooms and elevator; and an improved collection storage area. BBA is providing MEP engineering design for both phases of the project.
