The award-winning Downtown Transit Station (DTS) combines the functions of both a visitor center and a transit center for tours of the Charlottesville area, including nearby Monticello. The DTS serves as a principal intermodal transfer point, facilitating bus, trolley and bicycle trail connections. Its innovative program features a central hall containing retail, an art gallery and visitor center.
The building is designed to appear as an outdoor pavilion, with a large open stair connecting the two floors that mimics the stair in the adjacent plaza. A prominent glass façade allows natural light to penetrate the interior.
BBA provided mechanical engineering for the LEED Gold certified project. Sustainable design elements include the use of local materials and those with low VOC emissions, ground-coupled heat pumps, energy recovery on the exhaust air stream, and daylighting controls.
