On May 4 Eastern State Penitentiary staged a ribbon cutting ceremony that signaled the opening of a three-year run of “Prisons Today,” the first major museum exhibition on mass incarceration. This exhibit creatively challenges visitors to reevaluate the role and effectiveness of prisons in America.
BBA served as MEP engineer for the renovation of a series of inmate workshops known as Cellblock 4 which now houses the exhibit. Prior to our work, the cellblock had no heat or air conditioning. The new systems were specified and installed in the most unobtrusive manner possible. The design is also reversible: all mechanical and electrical systems can be removed and the building restored to its original state using demolished material which was carefully labeled and stored.
