Friends Select School is a coed, college prep Quaker day school serving pre-K through 12th grade. It has occupied its present location at 17th Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway since 1885.
In 2008, the school commissioned a master planning engagement, on which BBA served as the MEP engineering consultant. In 2011, several projects were initiated and rolled into a single design contract. The $3.5 million scope of work addresses the 400-seat Blauvelt Theater; extension of an open central stair (the Bailey Circle); renovation of 24,000 square feet of athletic facilities, including a natatorium and wrestling room; and renovation of the building’s front urban plaza and an adjacent stair tower connecting the plaza to rooftop playing fields.
Infrastructure improvements encompass two new HVAC systems, which include a 7,000 cfm exhaust fan; plumbing, fire protection, life safety, and electrical system upgrades; and new lighting for all areas within the project scope, including total replacement and reconfiguration of the theatrical lighting system.
