The Hamilton Family Children’s Zoo and Faris Family Education Center, aka KidZooU, were created from the adaptive reuse of the Paul Cret-designed former Pachyderm House and its 2.5-acre site. The award-winning, year-round, indoor-outdoor learning center teaches young guests how to become animal and environmental stewards. The popular Education Center contains expansive galleries for animal and conservation exhibits, classrooms, offices, and a toddler play area. Sustainability and stewardship were important parts of the project.
BBA provided MEP engineering for the LEED Gold certified project. A 40-well ground-coupled heat pump system provides heating and cooling. Other sustainable features include a state-of-the-art rain water collection system to flush the public toilets, rain gardens and vegetated green roofs to reduce water runoff into storm drains, and recycled and salvaged building materials.
