Sidwell Friends is a K-12 Quaker school, which had used its 1950s gymnasium as a makeshift worship space for more than a decade. The building’s location on campus was ideal; its acoustics and architecture were not. A renovation and expansion project transformed the gymnasium into a contemplative space for worship, with additional facilities for art and music instruction.
The program also encompassed renovation of locker rooms into an art studio and classrooms; renovation of portions of the Kogod Performing Arts building for a new lobby, circulation spaces and classrooms; and construction of an addition for circulation along the west elevation of the gym.
BBA provided engineering design for the award-winning, LEED Platinum certified Quaker Meeting House and Arts Center.
